Need to Consider Before Buying Heated Mattress

March 8th, 2010

Another alternative to electric blankets and expensive electric mattresses are heated mattress pads. In cold places or during winter, where freezing sheets at night become such a problem, a heated mattress pad can really be work of wonder sent from heaven. The good thing about these mattress pads is that they keep you warm during the night without you necessarily having to keep the temperature up inside the room, which means that it saves you more money from energy consumption! These pads are also found to relieve sore muscles and are found to be beneficial for people suffering from arthritis

These are just like normal mattress pads, which fit right on top of your mattress and under your bedding or sheets. They make use of electricity and the wires in them provide heat to the pad, spreading it out. It takes a couple of minutes for the heat to spread all over your bed, so it’s best to preheat it before climbing in. You don’t need to be worried about being burned by having a too-hot bed, because most heated mattress pads come with temperature controls for you to choose from. Some can even have as much as ten temperature warmth settings! Some pads even come with remote controls.

If you’re also worried about the discomfort caused by the wires inside the pad, then you should be pleased to know that most wires are now smaller and subtler, you won’t even feel them inside the pads. Some mattress companies have developed mattress pads that operate with low voltages (as low SA 25 volts or less), rather than the usual 120 volts, which make them safer to use. Other mattresses shut off automatically after ten hours to prevent the possibility of overheating and/or burning, should you forget to turn it off in the morning.

These heated mattress pads come in different sizes to fit different beds. You may even choose to put it over a couch, should you find yourself having to sleep in one. Heated mattress pads for double, queen size and king size beds come with two controls that can individually control the temperature of either sides of the bed. This makes it easy for partners who have different warmth or temperature preferences.

For safety reasons, it is best to read and follow instructions for use carefully and not use the pads on adjustable beds, inflatable air beds or water beds. Heated mattress pads should not be used for infants, as they cannot really tell you how warm they feel, and the sensitivity of their skin makes them prone to burning even with lower temperatures.

Most heated mattress pads are available in stores that sell electric blankets and covers. You can also shop in online stores, but since they come in different brands, are made of different materials (such as cotton, polyester or a combination of both) and may vary of the how plushness and thickness, so you might want to actually try lying on them to test it’s comfort level before buying one.
